It all depends on what parameters one puts around 'winning.'<br /><br />There's no question, though, in terms of which nation made the greatest sacrifice. The Soviet Union's <i>butcher's bill</i> for WWII was in excess of 20 millions (approaching 14% of the population). Some estimates run as high as 30 millions. Massive areas of the Soviet Union were laid waste.<br /><br />The Allies' sacrifices (at less than 1 million in aggregate) pale in comparison to the Soviets'. And the destruction of Allied home territory was much more limited (zero, in the case of the U.S.).<br /><br />And it is a virtual certainty that, had not those Soviet sacrifices been made, the war would have ended quite differently and Allied death tolls been much greater.
